Increases the elasticity and firmness of blood vessels, making them less likely to develop atherosclerosis. (When silica rejuvenates connective tissue, atherosclerotic swelling vanishes.)
Promotes anti-inflammatory, anti-infecting reactions.
Stimulates the immune system to fight off disease-causing invaders -- bacteria, viruses, and toxins.

Why our extreme quest for weight loss isn't working.
Baby Food Diet? Americans Are Spending $50 Billion a Year Dieting -- And We're Getting Crazier By the Minute: The reason diets and calorie-cutting often do not work in the long term comes down to basic science. Weight loss can occur when you burn more calories than you consume. But your body always needs a certain amount of energy in order to perform daily functions and keep up a speedy metabolism. When a person cuts calories to below 1,200 per day, the metabolism goes into "starvation mode" and slows down, meaning that your body is no longer burning the calories it once did when you participated in daily tasks or exercise. This conservation of calories is a natural reaction from your body in order to maintain as much energy as possible until your next meal. During the first weeks of dieting, the dieter may notice a quick weight loss, but these types of results quickly slow down as the metabolism slows.

Is schizophrenia rare if grain is rare?
Is schizophrenia rare if grain is rare? [Biol Psychiatry. 1984] - PubMed - NCBI: If, as hypothesized, neuroactive peptides from grain glutens are the major agents evoking schizophrenia in those with the genotype(s), it should be rare if grain is rare. To test this, we analyzed the results of our clinical examinations (e.g., kuru) and observations of anthropologists on peoples consuming little or no grain. Only two overtly insane chronic schizophrenics were found among over 65,000 examined or closely observed adults in remote regions of Papua New Guinea (PNG, 1950-1967) and Malaita , Solomon Islands (1980-1981), and on Yap , Micronesia (1947-1948). In preneuroleptic Europe over 130 would have been expected. When these peoples became partially westernized and consumed wheat, barley beer, and rice, the prevalence reached European levels. Our findings agree with previous epidemiologic and experimental results indicating that grain glutens are harmful to schizophrenics.

Michael's Supplementary Regimen - Fall 2009 - Regimens - LONGECITY
The State of My Pills, Fall 2009 - Regimens - LONGECITY: Unlike the shaky-to-begin-with-and-now-disproven resveratrol hype, there is a quite solid body of epidemiological evidence of an association between a couple of glasses of wine a day and lower risk of a range of adverse outcomes, including total mortality and dementia. The epidemiology clearly indicates a U-shaped dose-response curve for alcohol consumption and heart disease, with the best outcomes associated with 1-3 drinks/d, but only wine (not beer or spirits) lowers total mortality and dementia.

Calorie Restriction Appears Better Than Exercise At Slowing Primary Aging
Calorie Restriction Appears Better Than Exercise At Slowing Primary Aging: Previous research on mice and rats has shown that both calorie restriction and endurance exercise protect them against many chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some types of cancer. However, the research has shown that only CR increases the animals' maximum lifespan by up to 50 percent. These animal studies suggest that leanness is a key factor in the prevention of age-associated disease, but reducing caloric intake is needed to slow down aging.

WHFoods: Oranges: Arguably, the most important flavanone in oranges, herperidin has been shown to lower high blood pressure as well as cholesterol in animal studies, and to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. Importantly, most of this phytonutrient is found in the peel and inner white pulp of the orange, rather than in its liquid orange center, so this beneficial compound is too often removed by the processing of oranges into juice.

BPA Levels Rise 1,221% After 5 Days Eating Canned Soup
BPA Levels Rise 1,221% After 5 Days Eating Canned Soup: Volunteers who had one can of soup per day for five days had urine BPA (bisphenol A) levels rise by over 1,221% compared to the same people who had consumed freshly made soup daily for five days, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health reported in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). The authors say their study is one of the few to measure human BPA levels after consuming canned products.
Lead author, doctoral student, Jenny Carwile, who studies at the faculty's Department of Epidemiology, said:
"Previous studies have linked elevated BPA levels with adverse health effects. The next step was to figure out how people are getting exposed to BPA. We've known for a while that drinking beverages that have been stored in certain hard plastics can increase the amount of BPA in your body. This study suggests that canned foods may be an even greater concern, especially given their wide use."
